Elmira NY- Last season the Elmira Express boys basketball team did not win a game. This year they are out to a 2-0 start including an upset win over Maine Endwell Wednesday night.Sophomore Tyler Moffe(#11 middle) led the come from behind win, banging home 17 points. Right behind him was Tyler Ladd(#5 left)) who hot handed 14 second half point enroute to a 16 point night. Alex Bellardini and Zach Nierstedt(#10 right) each finished with 13. The Spartans led after each of the first three quarters, but Elmira caught fire,early in the fourth quarter, hitting from nearly every point of the floor. That, coupled with Maine Endwell's cold shooting, enabled the Express to pull from a 12 point deficit to a 17 point edge late in the fourth. M-E did cut the lead to 11 with less than a minute to play, but by then it was too late. Elmira improves to 2-0 while Maine Endwell drops to 1-1.
Horseheads NY- Led by Ellie Lesyk, the Lady Raiders opened their season with a convincing 66-42 win over Metro conference contender Union Endicott. Sporting new look uniforms of black with royal blue trim, Horseheads employed what Coach Andy Scott termed "rip and run" basketball. Both teams played to a 15 all tie after one quarter, but the Lady Raiders used multiple runs, especially late in the third quarter to begin pulling away from their guests. Lesyk finished with 18 points followed by 12 from Jen Chalk. Scott was quick to praise the board work of Chalk and Amanda Schiefen. Sierra McIver and Katy Vienneau helped to pace the Tiger attack with 14 and 13 points. Horseheads improves 1-0 while U- E drops to 1-1.
